NFL rumors: Another head coach could be next to walk out the door following Frank Reich

With Frank Reich out as the Panthers head coach, Brandon Staley might be the next one.

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley will be fired at the end of the 2023 season, barring a miracle, according to Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz.

“Brandon Staley, barring a miracle down the stretch, is out with the Los Angeles Chargers. And the reason is they have not had sustained regular season success. They've only been to one playoff game in three-plus years. It was a catastrophic loss to the Jaguars. Their defense is consistently the bottom half or, in this case, this season, bottom five across every major statistical category, including total defense, which is dead last.”

The Chargers come off a 20-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night. That was their third straight loss, downgrading their record to 4-7. The team had high expectations after a playoff appearance last season. Staley's seat started to get warm after losing a 27-0 lead to the Jaguars during the 2023 AFC Wild Card Playoff game.

Despite having two winning seasons in 2021 and 2022, the Chargers have been a mess on defense, being in the bottom 10 on total defensive yards and dead last this season.

Staley had a reputation as a defensive specialist when he was hired in 2021. The defense has not lived up to his reputation, even though the Chargers have invested heavily on defense with Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, and safety Derwin James. The Chargers are last in the NFL in total yards (390.6 yards per game), last in passing yards (280) and 25th in scoring defense (23.5 points per game) in 2023.

Chargers defense has struggled all season, having questions about whether Staley would give up his play-calling duties. The question prompted a heated response from Staley following the Chargers' 23-20 Week 11 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The Chargers have never made an in-season head coaching change, but if the team continues to sink, they may break with tradition. Staley's time as head coach in Los Angeles appears to be ending, and the Chargers will be looking for their third head coach in the last four seasons.
